Who am I?

My name is Pete Barty

I am a qualified Gestalt Counsellor. Just as importantly, I am someone who cares deeply about our mental wellbeing and ability to live meaningful lives.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, counselling within their ethical guidelines, which include confidentiality. I have considerable experience volunteering my counselling services working with those affected by cancer.

My own professional and personal development is very important to me. This helps to improve my knowledge and skills continuously. We should never stop learning.

What is Gestalt?

Gestalt therapy is a form of therapy which deals very much with how we feel in the here and now and how we make contact with and experience the world.

A fundamental aim of Gestalt is to bring elements of ourselves into our awareness to move toward acceptance. This is often achieved through creative work with the client.

What is Counselling?

Counselling, or therapy, is a process which explores the issues which are causing someone concern or distress. There are a number of forms of therapy which you will see listed; Psychodynamic, CBT, Integrative, Person-Centred, this list goes on. I offer a form of counselling centred around Gestalt principles, although my practice is not exclusively so, as I will use other techniques when appropriate.

Whilst differing therapies exist, research has suggested that the most important factor in a successful outcome is the relationship between the counsellor and the client. Consequently a counsellor’s initial aim will be to form a comfortable, safe, secure relationship with the client.

Once a relationship is established, by journeying together through the emotions, behaviours and feelings which situations evoke, the underlying causes can be gently untangled.

I can help you with problems or issues such as; Relationship problems, Stress, Anxiety, Bereavement and Loss, Trauma, Depression, Problems at work, Lack of direction and Motivation.

My Fees

An introductory session can be arranged for £10 for half an hour to explore what it is you seek from therapy and how we might work together

All fees are based on a 50 minute session.

I predominantly have appointments available in the evenings and some weekends.

I offer appointments via Zoom, and face to face, and in some circumstances home visits may be arranged for those with mobility issues.

Fees are £45 for a session. For students and those on lower income I am able to discuss my fees.
